Austin Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce

August Newsletter

Greetings!  I hope this message reached you and yours doing well, prosperous and profitable.

Since our last correspondence, the board of directors and I have been hard at work.  We have made many significant strides, forging new relationships in the best interest of our organization and members.  I have spent a considerable amount of time meeting with decision makers in our community, these meetings included:

  • Lee Leffingwell, mayor
  • Mike Martinez, mayor pro-tem
  • Chris Riley, Austin City Council

  • Heath Riddles, OutCast Radio
  • Skot Tulk and Jake Gonzales, aGLIFF
  • Dean Lofton, Austin Independent Business Alliance
  • Julie Hart and Jennifer Walker, Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau

Over the last couple of months we have hosted two board "meet and greets", a post-pride appreciation party, and two networking luncheons.  These events have been well planned, well executed, and well attended.  If you haven't made it out to an AGLCC event lately, we would be delighted to see you at the next one.

As for current goals, I have asked the board of directors to focus on three main things:

  1. building the board,
  2. building membership,
  3. plan for PRIDE 2010.

Through many efforts and through personal networking we have recruited several candidates who have applied to join the board.  I look forward to introducing the newest board members at our luncheon on Tuesday.

WEBSITE

By now, I hope you have had a chance to check out our new, re-branded website.  We're very pleased with the progress we've made with the website. Our business members may now log in to the website and update their directory listing. There is a tutorial video for updating your listing at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IpHhrmC_04

If you have an event that you would like included on the calendar, feel free to email that information to Tory Ketter, our secretary, at secretary@aglcc.org.  He will need:

  • Event name
  • Date
  • Time
  • Location
  • Description

PRIDE 2010

Perhaps the largest LGBT event in Central Texas is our PRIDE celebration.  The 2010 event is shaping up to be the largest PRIDE event in Austin's history. Amy Cook, Gregg Klar, Robert Grunnah and I will be the leading the organization of next year's PRIDE festivities.  You will see a lot of changes to the festivities in 2010, one of the most significant will be the location.  After consultation and input from various community and city leaders, we have reserved the Long Center for June 4-5, 2010.  Mark your calendar and tell your friends. Look for a community stakeholder meeting notice to be set in the coming weeks, all are welcome to attend.

We are still looking for volunteers in these areas:

  • Fund raising
  • Marketing
  • Community Relations
  • Faith / Spirituality
  • Children / Family Activities
  • Hotel
  • City of Austin Permitting
  • Food / Beverage

If you are interested in getting involved, contact me at 512-468-1813 or president@aglcc.org

My most heart-felt appreciation to the folks who have already committed to PRIDE 2010:

  • Merchandise Manager – John Feudo
  • Volunteer Director – Stephanie Martinez
  • Accessibility Director – Richard Waterhouse-Leal
  • Vendor Relations – Amy Cook

YOUR RIGHTS

I am happy to report that the City of Austin has passed a non-discrimination resolution that protects the rights of LGBT employees of city contractors.  Some time ago, Council Member Laura Morrison reached out to AGLCC for input on the resolution.  In addition to offering our input, I wrote a letter of support to all the members of the city council.  We are very fortunate to live in a city that stands for the fair treatment of our community. My dear friend, Laura Morrison, was the sponsor of this bill and continues to be a great advocate for AGLCC and Austin's LGBT community.  Follow these links for the press coverage:

MEMBERSHIP

If you're receiving this email it's because you're on our list of more than 1,200 people in our database, it does not mean that you are a paying member of AGLCC.  Currently there are only about 200 paying members of the organization.  Dues help maintain the cost of the organization, making it possible for us to hold networking events, have a web presence, and give your interest a voice in our city. Please visit aglcc.org to renew your membership.

Gregg Klar, membership chair, is currently seeking committee members.  If you are interested in helping, email Gregg at membership@aglcc.org.

LET'S DO LUNCH

I look forward to seeing you at our next Networking Luncheon on Tuesday, August 25, 11:30am - 1pm at Cru on 2nd.  We have arranged a set menu that will be $15 for members, $20 for non-members.  Our panel will consist of legal experts who are there to discuss the law and your business.  If you haven't been to a lunch lately, it's time to come back.  Julie Nelson is our business programming chair and is doing a fabulous job.

  • August 25: Legal Panel
  • September 22: LGBT Adoption
  • October 27: Austin's Economic Forecast and the Gay Dollar - Special Speaker: Jon Hockenyos, principal of TXP

As always, I welcome your emails, phone calls, and willingness to help.  Please don't hesitate to contact me at 512-468-1813 or email me, president@aglcc.org.

Be well,
