January 28th Meeting Recap

Pics from Jan 28 Our Toastmaster of the evening Jade Yost ran an excellent meeting at his first time as Toastmaster. The theme of the night was "Freedom Rings".

Club Vice President - Education Candice Beckmann delivered an informative educational moment where she compared Beyoncé performing at the Super Bowl to the nerves one might get speaking, acknowledging that imagining everyone in their underwear doesn't work for everyone! Then the evening's vote counter Dick Dunbar explained the voting procedure by having the group imagine walking down the red carpet at the Oscars with paparazzi taking photos and posting on social media since the winners of evening will also have their photos posted on Facebook.

Next, Candice Beckmann led the group in a table topics session with questions written by Jeff Davis. Joseph Gave defined freedom to a child by using words too big for a child to understand. Marc Brewster, CC thought that the "pursuit of happiness" is our most important freedom. Jeff Stoddard, DTM didn't think it was possible to abuse the freedom of speech, except maybe for lies. Ron Sheaffer, DTM explained that access to semi-automatic assault weapons is a freedom we don't need. Guest Jeff Stensland thought all the founding fathers were influential in their own way, but Washington was maybe the most important because of the symbol he became. Guest Trent McClure liked both George Michael and Aretha Franklin's versions of "Freedom", but Aretha did it better. Guest Al Reid disagreed that Liz Taylor abused her freedom by being married so many times because it was her way to express the "pursuit of happiness".

Club members Jimmy Flannigan, CC, CL and Kevin Wares gave prepared speeches. Jimmy's speech "Cruising" (ACS "Entertaining Speaker" #1) described his experience taking his first cruise. Kevin's speech "Buying Stored and Forgotten Treasures" (CC #2) was an informative speech on the do's and don'ts of storage auctions.

After the prepared speeches, Ladi Loera (VP-Membership) led the evaluation team. Bart Loeser, CC (President) and Art Peterson provided entertaining and informative speech evalutions. Also helping run the meeting were Kevin Davis as WAG, Ceci Gratias as Timer, and Dick Dunbar as Vote Counter.

Awards Congratulations to our winners of the evening, Marc Brewster, CC for Best Table Topic, and Bart Loeser, CC for Best Evaluation!
