AGLCC Congratulates Austin City Council for Passing Resolution Backing Domestic Partner Benefits

AUSTIN, Texas (October 28, 2013)— The Austin Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (AGLCC) applauds the Austin City Council for its passage of a resolution that requires companies seeking economic development incentives from the city to offer domestic partner benefits.

“Businesses that are moving to Austin or expanding in Austin and want to receive economic development incentives must be held to a higher standard — a standard that reflects that beliefs of Austin taxpayers,” said Jimmy Flannigan, president of AGLCC.

Council Member Mike Martinez sponsored the resolution, with Council Member Laura Morrison and Council Member Kathie Tovo co-sponsoring it.

“AGLCC thanks Mr. Martinez, Ms. Morrison, Ms. Tovo and their council colleagues for their continuing support of Austin’s LGBT community,” Flannigan said. “While the resolution still allows council to exempt future economic incentive recipients from the domestic partner benefits requirement, rest assured that leaders of AGLCC will continue to work with council members and city officials to ensure LGBT residents and businesses in Austin are on equal footing.”

The City Council approved the resolution Thursday, Oct. 24.

The Austin Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (AGLCC) is Central Texas’ home for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) supportive businesses and organizations.
