AGLCC Embraces Austin City Council Initiative to Boost LGBT Tourism

AUSTIN, Texas (January 24, 2014) — The Austin Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (AGLCC) is embracing an emerging initiative to boost LGBT tourism in Austin.

On Thursday, Jan. 23, the Austin City Council passed a resolution calling on the AGLCC to work with the Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Austin city manager on finding ways to attract LGBT-related tourism, events and conventions to Austin. Council Member Laura Morrison sponsored the resolution.

“LGBT tourism represents a great opportunity for Austin—an opportunity that definitely has not been fully tapped,” said Jimmy Flannigan, president of the AGLCC. “The AGLCC looks forward to collaborating with the Convention & Visitors Bureau and the city manager to grow LGBT tourism and create more economic opportunity for all of Austin.”

According to LGBT-focused Community Marketing Inc., the annual economic impact of LGBT tourism in the U.S. exceeds $70 billion. The economic impact of LGBT tourism in Austin isn’t known.

"Potential for economic development in Austin’s LGBT community, tapping both national and international opportunities, remains to be leveraged, in part due to lack of targeted infrastructure," the resolution says.

The city manager is scheduled to report to the City Council on the status of the LGBT tourism effort by March 28. "Growing LGBT tourism in Austin will require teamwork among a variety of local LGBT groups and leaders. National research on how LGBT people make travel decisions will help guide this initiative," Flannigan said.
