NerdWallet Names Austin Among Country’s Most LGBT-Friendly Cities

AUSTIN, Texas (May 28, 2014) — Personal finance website NerdWallet has confirmed what the Austin Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (AGLCC) already knew — Austin is one of the most LGBT-friendly cities in the country.

In honor of Pride Month, NerdWallet crunched the numbers to find the most LGBT-friendly cities in the U.S. The website put Austin at No. 7 on its list. No other Texas city appeared in the top 10.

“With an open and welcoming community, supportive elected officials in local government, a vibrant cultural scene and a healthy LGBT business community, it is no wonder that Austin ranked so high on NerdWallet’s list of LGBT-friendly cities,” said Edgar Gierbolini, president of AGLCC. “Austin’s longtime status as an LGBT-friendly place is one of the many reasons why Austin is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country.”

NerdWallet weighed three factors for a city in coming up the ranking:

  • Percentage of households with same-sex partners (Austin’s number: 1.2 percent)
  • Score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index (Austin’s score: a perfect 100)
  • Number of sexual-orientation-related hate crimes per 100,000 residents (Austin’s number: 0.12)

Taking into consideration all three factors, Austin scored 80.93 on NerdWallet’s scale, with 100 being perfect.

Here is NerdWallet’s list of the 10 most LGBT-friendly cities in the U.S.:

  1. Seattle (score: 96.81)
  2. San Francisco (score: 90.09)
  3. Atlanta (score: 85.15)
  4. Oakland, California (score: 85.11)
  5. Long Beach, California (score: 81.84)
  6. Minneapolis (score: 81.02)
  7. Austin (score: 80.93)
  8. Jersey City, New Jersey (score: 77.35)
  9. St. Paul, Minnesota (score: 77.32)
  10. Chicago (score: 76.84)
