AGLCC President Jimmy Flannigan Receives First-Ever Leadership Award
from Chamber

AUSTIN, Texas (December 20, 2013) — Jimmy Flannigan, a longtime leader of the Austin Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (AGLCC) and its current president, is the inaugural recipient of an annual AGLCC leadership and service award that will bear his name.

The award recognizes "outstanding achievement, unwavering dedication and fabulous service to the AGLCC and to the community."

Amy Cook, vice president of AGLCC, said Flannigan’s tenure with the chamber has been marked by "aspiration, inspiration and perspiration."

"Jimmy’s dedication and devotion to the AGLCC have been unprecedented in the history of AGLCC and are unlikely to ever be duplicated. With Jimmy’s stellar leadership as an example, we wanted to set a standard for future leaders of the Chamber," Cook said.

Ceci Gratias, a member of the AGLCC board, said future recipients of the award must be visionary, just as Flannigan is.

"Future honorees will have to display unusual dedication to the mission of the Chamber — not just to the membership but the community as whole. Anyone who receives the award to be named after Jimmy will have to go far above the call of duty," Gratias said.

Edgar Gierbolini, vice president-elect of the AGLCC board, noted that Flannigan’s work with the Chamber has helped raise Austin’s national profile.

"The forward-thinking partnerships that Jimmy has been instrumental in forming around the country will continue to benefit LGBT and LGBT-friendly businesses here at home," Gierbolini said.

Flannigan served on the AGLCC board from 1999 to 2009 and rejoined the board in 2012. He is the only person to serve two separate terms as AGLCC’s president,

Among the accomplishments during Flannigan’s AGLCC tenure:

  • AGLCC was named 2013 Rising Star Chamber of the Year by the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.
  • AGLCC hit the 325-member mark in the summer of 2009, the most members in the chamber’s history. AGLCC now has nearly 300 members.
  • AGLCC sponsored the 2013 SXSW #BigGay Kickoff Party, the largest LGBT event to be held in Austin history other than Pride activities.
  • AGLCC launched the country’s first-ever LGBT chamber of commerce magazine, Forward Austin, in 2007. The latest incarnation, The Agenda, now is the longest-running print publication in Austin’s LGBT community.

"I’m humbled to be honored by this award and the legacy it hopes to create," Flannigan said. "It’s a real testament to the team of leaders and advocates who have stuck with me all these years to create success and prosperity in Austin and the LGBT community."

The Austin Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (AGLCC) is Central Texas’ home for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) supportive businesses and organizations. The chamber is the best resource to learn about LGBT-friendly businesses, services, community resources and events in the Austin area.
